Hail to the Redtails?

A piece of welcome news (when there isn’t much good news) at the beginning of July 4th Weekend is that Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins football team, is finally seriously considering changing the team’s name from the current one, that’s clearly a racially derogatory one, and that many people, including me, have wanted changed for a lot of years. This is quite a change for Snyder, who’s always completely resisted such a change in the past. I think there’s no doubt that it’s just the latest outcome of the re-energized Black Lives Matter movement, and a positive one. No doubt, also, that pressure from the corporate world is making a big difference here too (FedEx, who pays for the right to name the stadium, Nike, etc.).

The new team name that I’ve heard tops the list of possibilities is the “Redtails”, after the nickname of the Tuskegee Airmen, the famous squadron of African American airmen of World War II. I’m not sure, but I think “Redtail” may also refer the Redtail Hawk. In any case, that name sounds great to me. It would even “fit” into a new version of the team song ( “Hail to the Redtails”), though some other words would need changing. Stay tuned!
